NOBILITY August 16

Luke 1:1-4

Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us,

Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word;

It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus

That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed.

Luke, Mathew, & Mark are called the synoptic gospels, which means: “Seeing the whole together at a glance.” Considered ‘The human gospel.’ Luke portrays Jesus Christ as God and Man.

One thing to know is that Luke was not one of the original disciples of Christ. His ministry began with the Apostle Paul. He was educated as a physician, became a historian, a faithful, loyal aid to Paul, and a co-worker with Mark.

Luke is observant, and he seems always to be taking in the gospel, studying and preserving those essential things, and then determining that he needs to write down his knowledge so that others will receive understanding. He talks to others and reads a compilation of first-hand accounts.

He qualifies his book by writing: ‘with perfect understanding.’ We would say something like, “I know exactly what I’m talking about,” It sounds like a doctor to me. Confident and filled with the Holy Spirit, Luke pens this letter to: Excellent Theophilus.

Here again, there’s much speculation as to who: “Excellent Theophilus” may have been; Someone of Nobility, held a High Position, held in High Honor to receive the gospel, the Good News, to share it with others.

Amazingly, Theophilus means: “Friend of God.”

It sounds to me like he was writing this letter to you:

Someone of Nobility a child of God, someone held in a High Position seated next to Jesus Christ at His right hand, held in High Honor so valuable that you bought with the precious Blood of the Lamb, Worthy to receive the Gospel of the Good News and share it with others.

Most Excellent Friend of God, Enjoy your day!

He is: Immanuel
