How Close? August 1

Genesis 5:24

And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.

Enoch is one of the most mysterious men in the Bible, or so we think. Enoch was the fifth descendant of Adam. His name meant: ‘Teaching,’ and based on his genealogical birth position; he was the sixth man. God created man on the sixth day, and numerically six is considered man’s number.

God the Father, Jesus the Son, and The Holy Spirit are one. A combination of three numerically represents The Godhead. Also, on the third day, God created dry land, the herb-yielding seed, the fruit tree yielding fruit after its kind.

This combination of three combined with man’s number can later be seen in:

1Kings 10:14

Now the weight of gold that came to Solomon in one year was 666 talents of gold,

Here we have a series of three, distinguishing man’s number, 6, signifying the heart of man through King Solomon, man’s desire to accumulate wealth. We can see the final climax of man’s number in:

Revelation 13:18

This calls for wisdom: let the one who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man, and his number is 666.

Mankind’s desire for dominance and power is the final attempt at total control.

Yet, we see that Enoch was set free of these self-ambitions. He’s an example of a man becoming what God intended us to be, a companion and a friend. His walk with God was so genuine, so close, that God brought him to heaven without death. True to his name: ‘Teaching.’ He wrote the Book of Enoch as a letter to the people of the very last days. Moses and the Hebrews carried it with them out of Egypt along with the book of Job. Jesus & Jude both quoted him.

He was a prophet that warned the people before Noah of the flood by naming his son Methuselah, which meant: “My Death Shall Bring.” Everyone knew this meant the great deluge. Noah was the grandson of Methuselah, and well, you and I are all descendants of Noah.

We haven’t heard the last of Enoch. He is set to return in the book of Revelation 11:3 as one of the two witnesses.

Currently, he is positioned before God along with Elijah, and this is how God sees them, men, who were completely sold out to God:

Revelation 11:4

These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth.

Like oil pouring out from an olive tree, he poured out the knowledge of God, interceded for many, taught the way, explained the truth about sin, and judgment explained the consequences. He indeed was a candlestick for man, a light in the darkness trying to direct humanity. He became so close in his relationship with God that God wanted to be with him continuously. While walking down a solitary road, he was, and then he was not, for God took him.

One thing we can learn from Enoch is that we are all on our road with God. How close we want to walk with God is up to us.
