The One Who Lifts My Head March 2

Psalm 42:11

Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior, and my God.

Have you ever had depression before? A depression that is so deep within you, that all your physical pores feel depressed. It can be hard to lift your arm or even your head to give a polite smile.

Psalm 3:3

But thou O LORD art a shield for me, my glory, and the lifter up of mine head.

Did you notice that: “O LORD” is in all caps? Because the Jewish people considered the name of God very sacred, they would not spell out the vowels. “O LORD” was written YHWH in this instance, and this is where we derive the word Jehovah as well. It show’s God to be eternal, it also stresses his redemptive nature towards Israel. But I want to take it one step backward to look at:

Psalm 3:2 Many are saying about me, “Even with God on his side, he won’t be victorious.” Selah

Get excited! This Psalm is not directed towards the nation of Israel; it is directed toward you! “Many are saying about me” and me is you! Father God is saying that ALL of His redemptive nature is focused on you! He is your shield, your shield of Faith:

Ephesians 6:16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

Back in the day the Romans used to dip their shields in water before the battle in order to quench the flaming arrows the enemies would shoot towards them.

While praying one time I had a vision of a shield catching on fire, and it was on fire quickly, it looked like someone had dipped it in lighter fluid. The Holy Spirit let me know that these were words that people say against themselves and their situations, that take away the effectiveness of the shield. Please don’t say negative things against yourself. You were made in the image of God and every time you belittle yourself you are belittling the image of God. So do not fear:

Isaiah 41:10 So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

How do you turn this depression around? With a joyful heart, I realized some time ago that happiness is the gift you give yourself. Place no evil before your eyes, listen to no bad thing, watch a clean comedy, and if you still can’t laugh, fake a laugh until you laugh, I promise it won’t take long if you ask Jesus to help you. Once you do this, you have this promise:

Proverbs 17:22

A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken Spirit drieth the bones.
