“Praise before Petitions.”

Psalm 68:5-6

He is a father to the fatherless; he gives justice to the widows, for he is holy.

He gives families to the lonely, and releases prisoners from jail, singing with joy! But for rebels there is famine and distress.

This Psalm is so wonderful, written for a time of joy, the day that the ark of the covenant was taken back to Mount Zion. Previous to this point in time, the ark was captured by the Philistines, miraculously returned to Israel, and stored at the home of Obed-Edom.

Now it is being returned and King David is dancing before the ark’s processional with all his heart, and he wrote this Psalm as a memorial to Father God.

Psalm 68 is worthy of study; in fact, it is worthy of a whole sermon. But in verses one through six we can see an insight into prayer. King David starts off with praise, this is the blueprint for prayer: “Praise before Petitions.”

Many times, over the years I have been asked by single people to pray that God would give them a husband or a wife and this is the verse I pray.

A distraught mother once asked me to pray for her son who was in jail for manslaughter, I did, and she asked me to go visit him, so I went.

When I met the young man, he asked me if I was the one that had prayed with his mother and I said yes, he told me that the District attorney had dropped all charges, and the young man was all smiles.

I’ve noticed in my life when everything seemed hopeless, that when I prayed and reminded God what He had done for me, the times He saved me, restored me, and remembered me, my confidence in God would surge, my shoulders would lift up, and when that happens.

You just found… faith

Little Old Cleaning Woman

There was a little old cleaning woman that went to the local church. When the invitation was given at the end of the service, she went forward wanting to become a member. The pastor listened as she told him how she had accepted Jesus and wanted to be baptized and become a member of the church.

The pastor thought to himself, "oh my, she is so unkempt, even smells a little, and her fingernails are not clean. She picks up garbage, cleans toilets - what would the members think of her." He told her that she needed to go home and pray about it and then decide.

The following week, here she came again. She told the pastor that she had prayed about it and still wanted to be baptized. "I have passed this church for so long. It is so beautiful, and I truly want to become a member."

Again the pastor told her to go home and pray some more. A few weeks later while out eating at the restaurant, the pastor saw the little old lady. He did not want her to think that he was ignoring her so he approached her and said, "I have not seen you for a while. Is everything all right?"

"Oh, yes," she said. "I talked with Jesus, and he told me not to worry about becoming a member of your church."

      "He did?" said the pastor.

"Oh, yes" she replied. "He said even He hasn't been able to get into your church yet, and He's been trying for years."

Happy Father's Day

Psalm 103:13

He is like a father to us, tender and sympathetic to those who reverence him.

Webster's dictionary defines the word ‘Reverence’ as, Profound respect mingled with love and awe; as for a Holy being…

God loves us, in fact, you can’t out love God, as much love as you can muster, He still loves you more. He’s a Father to us loving and compassionate. Tender means to take care of any person or thing and sympathetic has a large meaning, but I believe He means to suffer in our pains.

Psalm 103 describes several attributes to Father God, and the Psalmist calls these “His Benefits”  Here are some of God’s Benefits listed in Psalm 103:

He forgives all our iniquities, He heals our diseases, He redeems our life, He crowns us with Loving-kindness & tender mercies. He satisfies your mouth with good things, He renews your youth like that of an eagle, He executes righteous judgment for the oppressed, He’s slow to anger, He casts our sins as far as the east is from the west, He remembers where we came from and where we are going.

It pays to Love your Father.

A Call to Be With Me

(Holy Spirit)

Ecclesiastes 7:8

Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.

Truer words could not have been written to govern our times. Our nation is in adversity & much trouble. People scoffing in the land that wants to be free. When you read or watch the news there is so much violence and so much hate. Place the afore trio into a funnel and it dribbles down to this, bondage.

It is all about trying to bind the Holy Spirit, and The Holy Spirit has told me, ‘He wants to be free, it’s a bondage of Me.’

“This is the beginning of a bitter thing, a Spiritual battle that Christians must fight on their knees, in it with Me, It’s a battle for light, the land is going to be free.”

Patience is a virtue and virtue will get you through this, the ability to wait for something without frustration is the opposite of the enemy, who vaunts his pride with chants and violence.  Forever a roaring lion that does not regard the will of mankind, a yearning to be free, Jesus gives us that Liberty.

A proud spirit it was that got Lucifer kicked out of heaven, and in his pride, he always suffers defeat.

That’s why with God, We Will Win.

His Truth

Genesis 3:13

And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.

The day of the forbidden fruit, what did we do? We have all partaken of the forbidden fruit, the fruit of temptation. Everyone is tempted by the enemy, and just like Eve, we have all eaten.

There are so many ways the enemy can deceive. Jesus is the way the truth and the life; Satan is the father of all lies, quite the contrast. The enemy has so many ways to beguile, and here is one of the worst lies he uses to deceive us, the lies we believe about ourselves.

Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will defeat me, (I ad-libbed that rhyme to make my point.)  The enemy uses words and subtle thoughts to keep you imprisoned, keeping you in a place lower than God has intended you to be. He typically does this through others, insults hurled at you in jest, or any other way he can get them into your subconscious.

For years I would pray and ask God to help me be an eloquent speaker, I always compared myself to the great pastors and evangelists I listened to. Then one-day I prayed this prayer and the Lord spoke to me:

“Who told you weren’t an eloquent speaker?”

I thought for a moment and could not think of anyone ever saying that to me, so sheepishly I said, “The devil?”

“That’s Right! You’re full of My experience and Love!”

And that was the end of the conversation, enough said, I had been beguiled for years, the next time I preached I had so much more confidence, (okay,  I confess it was last Sunday.)

But you get the point, take out the trash and start seeing yourself the way God sees you, He sees you as More than a conqueror!

LOGOS / RHEMA

John 1:1-2

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

The same was in the beginning with God.

&

Romans 10:17

So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

In the beginning was The Divine Expression, the Logos of God.  Notice that in John 1:1, Word is capitalized, this is because it is the name of Jesus Christ. In the original Greek, the word Logos was used. Logos means: The Divine Expression  (That is Jesus Christ,) or something said, an account, preaching, reason and much more.

When they translated it into English, they simply translated it: Word, sometimes capitalized and sometimes not.

Above in Romans 10:17,  Paul uses the Greek word: Rhema and this is also translated into the name word, which is the spoken words of the bible or written words in the bible. So, in essence, we have one word with two possible meanings.

It somehow reveals to us the magnificent beauty of God’s Glory, His intellect and so much more. In Genesis chapter 1, God spoke the universe into existence using these words: “God said.”

“God said” ten times, eight times He referred to creation and two times were instructions given to mankind.

So, what’s the point behind all this? Jesus’s name in heaven was probably Logos before He transitioned to earth, God used the Rhema word to create the earth and universe, Jesus became the Logos on earth to speak the Rhema words of God in order to reunite His creation and defeat the enemy with His Word, so that He can make all things new:

Revelation 21:5  And He that sat upon the throne said, "Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these Words are true and faithful."

Now that’s Logos

Pray The Good

Philemon 1: 4-7

I always thank my God when I mention you in my prayers, because I hear of your love and faith towards the Lord Jesus and for all the saints. I pray that your participation in the faith may become effective through knowing every good thing that is in us for the glory of Christ. For I have great joy and encouragement from your love, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you, brother.

HCSB

This is a Gospel prayer, a good news prayer, notice that Paul prays for his friend Philemon from a position of Thankfulness. He prays for his good qualities, telling Jesus how good of a person Philemon is.

I think most of us are guilty when it comes to praying for the poor qualities of our friends and family, pointing out to God what we think is potentially wrong with them.

From a heart filled with love for his friend he prays the good qualities to God and then, as though Paul has promoted Philemon to the Lord he asks God to grant Philemon the gift of knowing every good thing that is in us for the glory of Christ.

Paul wants Philemon to see the good traits in people, the best quality in others. I was truly fortunate to be able to study and learn under the teachings of Dr. Sandy Powell, she has this gift of knowing the best qualities in others and making every student feel special, it’s love that reflects the qualities of Christ.

Maybe if we pray for the best traits in others it will help us to have:

Great joy and encouragement

Be a Good Gardener

Titus 3:14

For our people must learn to help all who need their assistance, that their lives will be fruitful.

This verse is from the Living Bible the translation makes it easier to understand what Paul was conveying to the church.

There are two quotes I hang onto in life, one is by Mother Theresa.  While traveling by plane someone asked her, “How do you do ministry?” Her response was, “Find something to give and then give it.”

The second quote was by a friend of mine, “It’s never convenient to do ministry.”

By that, he meant that when people need your help it doesn’t just conveniently place itself in your schedule for the day. Usually, it happens after you have worked all day and feel like resting, then you suddenly get a call.

Hebrews 13:16

Don’t forget to do good and to share what you have with those in need, for such sacrifices are very pleasing to him.

I have to quote this verse to myself when I don’t feel like helping others, sometimes I get in a mental rut of feeling used by people. Then with the proper attitude adjustment, I realize:

I’m planting this seed for Jesus.

Strength to the Faint

Isaiah 40: 29

He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might He increaseth strength.

Understanding, God has it, when He carried the burden of our sin on the cross, He did this because of two of His many great traits, Love & Understanding. He knew we could never defeat sin on our own, and He knows the burden of the sin we carry. Sometimes we can let the mistakes of our past weigh us down to a point of weariness or becoming faint, some Christians refer to these times as being in the wilderness. It’s a place of our own making and for some of us a place we go when we get down.

Not wanting to pray, like Adam & Eve trying to hide our ways from God. Or we can face another type of faintness, its exhausting, physical, or mental or demonic attacks of the worse kind.

Years ago, I was going through some emotional times, I felt like I was a wounded fish in an aquarium filled with piranhas. At every angle, the enemy was applying severe pressure. It was like every fish knew I was wounded and would take a painful bite.

Then one morning I knelt on my knees and I could feel my veins bulging in my neck from anger, my face must have been beat red I told God I couldn’t take it anymore, and I needed His help, at that exact moment I felt His hand reach into my chest and gently squeeze my heart. He didn’t fill my heart with joy or happiness He filled it with strength, He strengthened me with the power that He gives to the faint.

Instantly I went from anger & weakness to confidence, suddenly I knew I could get through this. My strength came back and that’s partly what the word Power means, to give you strength and the ability to get through this.

Share The Comfort

II Corinthians 1: 3-4

Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort;

Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.

Apostle Paul knew how to encourage his followers because he knew who God is, our comforter. Paul was the ultimate wordsmith I think that he was probably one of the most intelligent men that ever lived.

Notice how he proceeds with this statement by invoking a blessing towards God, then he announces Who God is: Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort;

But then notice how the priests who translated this scripture placed a semicolon instead of a period or a comma. A semicolon provides a break in the flow almost like the word in Hebrew: Selah, (pause and think about that.) It provides clarity and then it joins the two thoughts together in a connection of ideas, and both ideas have to be a complete sentence.

When we’re in Christ Jesus you cannot separate God from our tribulations, His Mercies, and His comfort knowing that Christ Jesus would be the ultimate use of a semicolon, connecting us with God, enabling us to comfort others in their time of need.

Maybe, now you know why you have gone through so many tribulations, it’s so that you can comfort others with the knowledge of the comfort you have received in the past.

“When you’re at your lowest depths in life, the hardest type of praise, that forces you to push all pride and anger away is a sacrifice of Thanksgiving to the Lord."

This phrase .. so applicable – I believe I will carry it with me
