Psalm 60:11-12

Give us help from trouble: for vain is the help of man.

Through God we shall do valiantly: for He it is that shall tread down our enemies.

When you read this, it gives you a sense of peace and understanding that God will help you through your difficult times. When reading this Psalm from the beginning and relating it to the historical timeline of King David, you feel where it came from and what birthed this: Line of Faith.

This Psalm is an account of David's battles and victories found in II Samuel chapter 8. But In this chapter, there is no mention of any defeats? King David is slamming down victory after victory, yet he pens this Psalm, saying that God has cast us off?

Apparently, David's armies had a severe setback; in battle, an earthquake allowed the enemy forces to break his front lines. King David writes you made us drink from the cup of astonishment (a cup of suffering.)

By knowing this, we can see character traits that God cherished so much in King David. David didn't name his defeats; he didn't give credit the enemy; he didn't say, 'why has the devil prevailed over us?'

Instead, he humbles himself by asking God to give us help and reminding God that he can't win these battles without Him.

In our lives, maybe that recent defeat wasn't from the enemy; perhaps it was God stepping back a little? I don't know for sure, but I can guess what one cause can be: pride.

Pride comes before the great fall. When things get going well, it's within our nature to start taking credit for what God has done. Pride creeps in slowly and pretends to be innocent. If things aren't going so well, check for pride, no telling where it's hiding. Sometimes, it's just our attitude.
