Psalm 69:33

For the LORD heareth the poor, and despiseth not his prisoners.

Blessed be our God and His son our Lord Jesus Christ for such a comforting word as this. There are several different takes on how this verse could be translated. It all comes down to the very last word, the peculiar use of the word prisoners.

Some versions change it to read: needy ones, or his people in prison. But it’s clear that the intended use of this word or implied meaning, according to the root word in the original Hebrew was: Asiyr’ / Aw-sere’ : ‘Those which are bound’ captives, or a prisoner.

Paul and Silas certainly could have identified with this scripture when in the book of Acts chapter 16, they were whipped and severely beaten then cast into prison for the sake of the gospel.

But there is a different type of bondage, one that keeps Christians under a yoke of oppression and servitude with a silent plantation master behind the scenes, it the oppression of debt. It’s so easy to get caught up in credit card debt, car notes, boat loans, and the most common is purchasing too much house.

This is also called being ‘House poor’ people make a very good income and buy a house more than their budget can handle, expecting it to be a little rough for a couple of years until their finances catch up, they expect to receive a pay raise and instead the trap slams shut. They don’t get that raise, the company must give pay reductions to stay in business, on and on the cycle goes, could be a thousand reasons.

It’s like a trap, hunters used to catch birds, stretch a huge net across two trees that have a natural flight path for birds, and then the unsuspecting bird travels the same flight path it has taken dozens of times before, when suddenly it is caught, or rather snared in the net, the net of the fowler.

Psalm 91:3 Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler,

Yes, God will deliver you from that too, you have a promise. Ask God to deliver you, ask Him to send out help and good financial advice for the future, don’t limit Him to a single solution.

Because we serve a limitless God.
