Bible Scriptures for Self Defense

Exodus 22:2

If a thief be found breaking in, and be smitten so that he dieth, there shall be no bloodguiltiness for him.

If someone breaks into your home and you’re in fear for your life or the safety of your family you have the right to defend yourself and your family. This is saying that you will have no guilt before God.

Exodus 22:3

If the sun be risen upon him, there shall be bloodguiltiness for him - he shall make restitution; if he have nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft.

If the person surrenders or is turned and flees you shall not kill him. (if the sun be risen upon him) This means if the perpetrator lives to the next day they need to pay back what they stole or what they damaged. If they didn’t have anything, or the ability to pay they were to be sold into slavery for compensation. Now they go to prison & the court collects the fines?

Romans 13:4

For he is a minister of God for thy good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain, for he is a minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that does evil.

This instruction is about authority figures such as police, judges and DA’s and other types of authority. Ministers for good, if you’re the head of your household you are the High Priest of your household, and a minister for good unto your family. This places the sword on you to defend your family.

Luke 22:36

Then he said unto them, but now, he that has a purse, let him take it and likewise his provision bag; and he that has no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one.

Jesus knew that His time on earth was done and that people would need to defend themselves from evil, So the Lord was letting them know that this would be necessary as He would no longer be there.

The term ‘Sword’ comes from the Greek word:

Machaira (MAX-A-RA)

makh'-ahee-rah for Dagger

a knife, that is, dirk; figuratively war, judicial punishment: - sword.

The dagger was a defensive weapon men carried openly in there belt, it was curved and had a ornamental look to it. It was a necessity when traveling for your self-defense.

In comparison if you go to Revelations 19:15 you will see where God is referring to the sword as the Word of God.

Revelations 19:15

And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and He shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.

ῥομφαία

rhomphaia

hrom-fah'-yah

a sabre, that is, a long and broad cutlass (any weapon of the kind, literally or figuratively): - sword.

Now here He is referring to a battle sword because He is engaged in battle, but this sword represents the Word of God.

Proverbs 25:36

A righteous man falling down before the wicked is as a murky spring and a polluted well.

As Christians we are to defend the weak, the widows the orphans especially against violent people. How can you defend them if you’re not armed?

Nehemiah 4:17-18

Those that built on the wall and those that bore burdens and those that laded wrought with one hand in the work and with the other held a weapon.

For the builders, each one had his sword girded by his side, and so they built. And he that sounded the shofar was by me.

God blessed these men in their work while they took up arms to defend themselves.

Psalm 82:4

Deliver the poor and destitute; deliver them out of the hand of the wicked.

How can you defend the poor and needy from the wicked if you’re not armed? I learned long ago that I can’t physically take every person out there.

Romans 12:19

Not defending yourselves, dearly beloved; but rather give place unto the wrath of God, for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.

Paul is referring to the verse found in:

Deuteronomy 32:35

Vengeance and recompense are mine, in the time when their foot shall slide; for the day of their calamity is at hand and that which is determined upon them makes haste.

Now this means Christians should not be going after someone to get revenge, or hunting someone down that has wronged you, trust God to let the police handle that.

And remember He is:

The Lord my Strength!

Blessing’s
