The Power of Numbers

Ecclesiastes 4:12

Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him. And a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

The power of numbers. When the Romans invaded Britain the British noted the formation of the Roman legions and reportedly said: “When they fight in detached parties, they sacrifice the general cause.” They understood the necessity to break the lines of formation and get the individuals scattered.

Solomon is talking about the power of teamwork when one person works alone as versus two people together. With two people working together the work output more than doubles.

I have a friend that is an electrician, he has an apprentice that works for him. Many times he will be several rungs up on a ladder and asks his apprentice to grab a tool. The man is quick to bring it, the apprentice is a support to him. Imagine how much time and energy it would consume if my friend had to climb down the ladder and get the tool, then back up and restart where he left off. This is why there work increases from two to four.

But if he can see the need before it arises the tool can be ready. How many times in your job has someone said: “You need to do this.” It’s because they can see a need that you are not aware of.

Some theologians say this scripture doesn’t apply to marriage, but it certainly does. While laying in bed the Holy Spirit woke me up to pray for someone I was very tired, I prayed and then woke Judy and asked her to join me in prayer because:

Mathew 18:20

Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there I am in the midst of them.

Now we had a threefold cord that can’t easily be broken. Power through prayer and the promise that Jesus would be there. Take time to pray with your spouse, even if it is just for a moment knowing that Jesus will be standing there next to you.

What a Great Way to start the day!

He is: “Jehovah Shammah”

“The Lord is There”
