The Reason for Death

Genesis 3:7 & 21

And the eyes of them both were opened, and they were naked, and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed them.

Back to the beginning. After the fall of man, Adam and Eve sewed fig leaves together and made aprons. Notice at this particular moment we don’t see any gender bias when it comes to sewing. They were both in a hurry to get dressed.

They sewed fig leaves as an act of self-righteousness in trying to cover their sin. This is why if you ever have a dream with fig leaves and you know it is from God, He is trying to convey to you that you are covering your sin through your own acts of self-righteousness.

It wasn’t just that they knew that they were naked, think about all the other emotions that rushed into their being, shock, fear, embarrassment, condemnation. If they knew they were naked who were they trying to cover their nakedness from? The enemy. Now for the first time, he could see past their outer covering. No-one likes a pervert staring at them.

Then God shows up. Now everybody is scared. Notice the serpent remains silent. He’s already been cast out of the third heaven. The curse has been laid out. At this point he knows his limits.

However, God in His wisdom gives them a new covering. One made of skins. Some theologians suggest that God didn’t actually kill anything in the garden, but that he made skins, just like he created everything else. It could be.

But, here is wisdom. Imagine how emotionally hard it must have been for God to kill the animals before Adam & Eve. God does have emotions: love, patience, kindness, long-suffering. God by killing the animals re-enforces death. Adam, Eve and the devil see how death is. Satan gets a firsthand lesson in how to kill. Not realizing that death, which he craves so much, would be his defeat. Christ’s death on the cross.

Genesis 3:24

So He drove out the man; and He placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubim’s, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

Hebrew tradition speculates that the first part of this sentence was left incomplete. Due to the haste in which God had to get them out of the Garden and away from the Tree of Life.

I know death was option two, but if Adam and Eve had taken option three by eating from the Tree of Life, we would be well, beyond comprehension.

He is: “Alpha and Omega”

“The First and The Last”
